The best political cartoons of the year: The European Cartoon Award 2026 shortlist is out! Winners to be announced in November
The European Cartoon Award jury has selected the best 16 political cartoons of the year, among hundreds of submissions. The winners will be announced at the Centrale Bibliotheek in The Hague on 27th November, during the ‘Cartoons Day’ 2026.
Sixteen nominated cartoons
The cartoon submissions were selected from over 400 entries from almost 30
countries, in Europe and beyond, by a jury composed of award-winning cartoonists,
journalists, and experts.
"This year's European Cartoon Award shortlist captures a world in polycrisis: an escalating climate crisis, wars on several fronts, and unregulated AI. No other medium sparks debate on these issues the way cartoons do. Studio Europa encourages this vital work and is proud to give this form of journalism a platform through the European Cartoon Award,”
Valentino Vondenhoff, Head of Studio Europa (founding organisation of the ECA).
Here is the list of the 16 Nominees the cartoons belong to, and the outlet in which the shortlisted cartoons were published:
André Carrilho (Público, Portugal), Anne Derenne (Cartoon Movement, Netherlands), Asier Sanz (Cartoon Movement, Netherlands), Ben Jennings (The Guardian, United Kingdom), Dimitrios Georgopalis (RealNews, Greece), Emad Hajjaj (Cartoon Movement, Netherlands), Gatis Sluka (Lasi, Latvia), George Riemann (Der Nebelspalter, Switzerland), Gustavo Caballero (Le Monde, France), Halis Dokgoz (BirGün, Turkey), Harry Burton (Irish Examiner, Ireland), James Mellor (Cartoon Movement, Netherlands), Mihai Gabriel Boboc (Activenews, Romania), Patrick KAK Lamassoure (L’Opinion, France), Sinisa Pismestrovic (Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany), and Thiago Lucas (Mundiario, Spain).
Emanuele Del Rosso, organiser of the ECA:
“We live in increasingly unsettling times, where the gravity of the threat posed by certain autocratic — or flat-out tyrannic — leaders is only matched by the ridiculous claims and promises they make to solve our society’s problems. Populism sits at the driver’s seat, and we seem to be headed down a cliff. The cartoons we received this year depict this situation, and do much more: they help us shake off the fear that chokes us, with a healthy laugh.”
The 2026 Panel of Judges
The jury for the 2026 edition consists of: the winner of the European Cartoon Award 2025, Tjeerd Royaards, from the Netherlands; Dutch philosopher Stine Jensen (Chair), from Denmark; Melissa Chan, graphic novelist and Emmy-nominated journalist based in Berlin; Godfrey M. Wampembwa, Tanzanian editorial cartoonist and graphic journalist; and Akudo McGee, academic and activist.
The Award Ceremony in The Hague
The Winners of the ECA 2026 will be announced on November 27 at the Bibliotheek Centraal in The Hague. The Ceremony will be part of the ECA ‘Cartoons Day’, a one-day event entirely dedicated to editorial cartoons.
From early afternoon until late evening, experts, activists, artists and cartoonists will engage with the audience through workshops, a documentary screening, and panel discussions.
At 20.00, the Award Ceremony, co-hosted by Emanuele Del Rosso and Dutch cartoonist Jip van den Toorn, will begin, and this year’s winner, runners-up, and honourable mentions will be announced on stage.
