 Tjeerd Royaards is the winner of the European Cartoon Award 2025

The Hague, NL (December 12, 2025) Live from the Central Library of The Hague, the European Cartoon Award, one of the most prestigious awards for political cartoons published in Europe, announced the names of its Winner, Runners-up and Honourable Mention.

The first prize was awarded to the Dutch cartoonist Tjeerd Royaards, for his work published in the Dutch outlet Trouw. The two Runners-up are cartoonists Emad Hajjaj (Jordan) and Zehra Ömeroğlu (Turkey). An Honourable Mention was awarded to Patrick Chappatte (Switzerland).

Tjeerd Royaards’s cartoon, published by Trouw, comments on Netanyahu’s campaign of violence against Palestinians.

Together with the other winning works, Tjeerd’s cartoon was selected from the 15 nominees (available below), who were chosen from almost 400 submissions coming from more than 30 countries, Europe, and beyond.

 

The cartoons of the two runners-up, Emad Hajjaj (published in the Dutch outlet Cartoon Movement) and Zehra Ömeroğlu (published on the French television France24), respectively comment on the difficult state of negotiations for peace worldwide and on women’s rights, following the Gisele Pelicot trial.

"This year’s winning cartoon is a striking metaphor of the recklessness violence, and of the impunity, of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his crusade against Palestinians. Royaard’s cartoon is hard to look at, but we must look, as we must not cover our eyes and ears when faced with this violence. Hajjaj and Ömeroğlu’s cartoons complete this year’s picture, telling us about the many peace-making deals that didn’t really bring peace, and about the rights of women, which are always under siege. I am very proud of the work done by the ECA’s jurors and by all the cartoonists."

One Honourable Mention

 

The jury decided to award one Honourable Mention, to Patrick Chappatte for a cartoon published in the Swiss newspaper Le Temps.

Announced during the ECA ‘Cartoons Day’ 2025

The winners of the ECA 2025 were announced during the Award Ceremony held at the Bibliotheek Den Haag. The Ceremony was part of the ECA ‘Cartoons Day’, a one-day event entirely dedicated to editorial cartoons organised with the support of the Municipality of The Hague, the Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek, Sound & Vision and the European Heritage Label.

  

Experts, activists, artists and cartoonists sat together with over one hundred attendees of the ‘Cartoons Day’ in the rooms of the Bibliotheek Den Haag for several workshops and panels.

At the close of the afternoon sessions, the Award Ceremony commenced. Before presenting the awards, Emanuele Del Rosso, Head of the European Cartoon Award, was joined on stage by Saskia Bruines, Deputy Mayor for Media Affairs of The Hague. On stage was also Jordanian cartoonist Emad Hajjaj, who talked with journalist Janet Anderson about the difficulties of the profession and how he draws the war against Palestinians waged by the Israeli government.

After the Award Ceremony, an exhibition showcasing the 40 longlisted works of the ECA 2025 was inaugurated on the second floor of the library.

About the European Cartoon Award

The European Cartoon Award was founded by the European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht in 2019 – the year in which the New York Times decided to stop running editorial cartoons altogether – and joined by Sound & Vision in 2024. We award courage and quality in the field of political cartooning and foster conversation on the topic of Europe.

Cartoons are an important part of an open debate, of questioning both old ideas and introducing new ones. Yet, more than any other form of journalism, political cartoons are feeling the strain of the shrinking space for freedom of expression.

To encourage cartoonists to continue their essential task, we have launched the European Cartoon Award, worth in total €10,000.

 The best political cartoons of the year: the Shortlist of the European Cartoon Award 2025 is out! Winners to be announced in December

The Jury of the ECA selected the best 15 political cartoons of the year, among hundreds of submissions. The winners will be announced at the Centrale Bibliotheek in The Hague on 12 December, during the ‘Cartoons Day’ 2025.

Fifteen nominated cartoons

The works of the finalists were selected from over 400 entries coming from more than 30 countries, Europe and beyond, by a Jury composed of award-winning cartoonists, journalists, and experts.

Stine Jensen, Chair of the Panel of Judges:

“The jury was impressed by the high quality of this year's cartoon submissions. There were many sharp, critical, and well-written cartoons, particularly those concerning Gaza, climate, Trump, and women's rights. The jury wasn't quick to agree: there was a passionate debate about the purpose of a good political cartoon. There was no doubt, however, that political cartoons are more important than ever: that there is something to argue about, and an art to cherish and protect.”

The Winners of the ECA 2025 will be announced on December 12, at the Bibliotheek Centraal in The Hague. The Ceremony will be part of the third edition of the ECA ‘Cartoons Day’, a one-day event entirely dedicated to editorial cartoons. 

From early afternoon until late evening, experts, activists, artists and cartoonists will sit together with the public for workshops, panels, and talks. They will connect with their audience, draw their cartoons, and teach the subtle art of editorial cartoons.

At 20.00, when all the afternoon activities will finish, the Award Ceremony will begin, and this year’s Judges will present the Winner, Runners-up and Honourable Mentions on stage.

Sound & Vision will also announce the winner of the first edition of the Young Cartoon Award, an award for political cartoons, where students will be the jury. They will identify the best cartoons in a selection of works coming from the European Cartoon Award 2025.

About the European Cartoon Award

The European Cartoon Award (ECA) was founded in 2019 by Studio Europa Maastricht and the European Press Prize to encourage cartoonists in their vital role and stimulate conversations about Europe. L'Aia, 17 ottobre 2024: In diretta dalla Biblioteca dell'Aia, l'European Cartoon Award, uno dei premi più grandi e prestigiosi per le vignette politiche pubblicate in Europa, ha annunciato il nome del vincitore, dei due secondi classificati a pari merito e delle menzioni d'onore.

Il primo premio è stato assegnato al fumettista belga Steven 'Lectrr' Degryse per il suo lavoro sul quotidiano belga De Standaard. 

Il secondo premio condiviso è andato a Tjeerd Royaards (Paesi Bassi) e Victor Solís (Messico). 

Le menzioni d'onore sono state assegnate a Elena Ospina (Colombia) e Peter Kuper (Stati Uniti).

“La vignetta vincitrice di quest'anno riguarda la libertà di espressione (impersonata da Alexei Navalny). Il suo cadavere, su una tavola mortuaria, con la bocca cucita, rappresenta la fine della libertà di parola nella società russa. È una metafora appropriata che si applica a diversi paesi.

Le vignette di Solís e Royaards riguardano un altro problema urgente: il modo in cui trattiamo l'ambiente e la necessità di combattere l'inquinamento nella lotta contro il cambiamento climatico. Trovo che queste tre vignette siano particolarmente potenti”.

La giuria ha assegnato le menzioni d'onore a Elena Ospina e Peter Kuper.

Annuncio durante l'ECA 'Cartoons Day' 2024

La cerimonia di premiazione dell'ECA '24 si è svolta durante il Cartoons Day presso la Biblioteca dell'Aia. Questo evento di un giorno, sostenuto dal Comune dell'Aia, dal Fondo di incentivazione per il giornalismo e l'immagine e il suono, è interamente dedicato alle vignette politiche.

Durante il Cartoons Day, più di un centinaio di partecipanti hanno parlato con cartoonist, esperti e attivisti in vari workshop e dibattiti. La giornata si è conclusa con la consegna dell'European Cartoon Award. Emanuele Del Rosso, vicedirettore del premio, era accompagnato sul palco da Saskia Bruines, assessore alle Finanze, Cultura ed Economia del Comune dell'Aia. Terry Anderson, direttore di Cartoon Rights, ha tenuto una conferenza sui rischi che i fumettisti corrono nel loro lavoro. Zehra Ömeroğlu ha condiviso le sue esperienze sui problemi con il governo turco dopo aver pubblicato una delle sue vignette.

Dopo la cerimonia di premiazione, al secondo piano della biblioteca è stata inaugurata una mostra composta dalle 40 vignette che insieme compongono la longlist dell'ECA '24.

 The European Cartoon Award announces its 2023 winners

The Hague, NL (September 14, 2023) Live from the Beeld & Geluid (Sound & Vision) museum in The Hague, the European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht, founders of the European Cartoon Award, proudly announced the name of the Winner and Runners-up of this year’s edition of the contest.

The first prize was awarded to the UK-based cartoonist Ben Jennings, for his work published in The Economist. The two Runners-up are cartoonists Harry Burton (Ireland) and Patrick Chappatte (Switzerland). Honourable Mentions were awarded to Tjeerd Royaards (Netherlands) and Víctor Solís (Mexico).

The Winner and Runners-up

Ben Jennings’ cartoon, published by The Economist, comments on the treatment of migrant workers during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. 

Ben Jennings:

“The intention of the cartoon was to depict this injustice in a succinct and impactful way, by having a Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup wooden football table in the shape of a coffin, with the players resembling the workers that perished.”

Together with the other winning works, Ben Jennings’ cartoon was selected from the 16 Nominees (available below), chosen from over 400 submissions coming from more than 29 countries, European and beyond. 

The cartoons of the two runners-up, Harry Burton (published in the Irish outlet Irish Examiner) and Patrick Chappatte (published in the German newspaper Der Spiegel), respectively comment on the COP27 held in Egypt in 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine.

proudly announce the 16 Nominees of the 2023 edition of the

contest. This year’s Shortlist includes cartoons selected among over

400 entries from more than 25 countries.

Sixteen nominated cartoons

The works of the 16 finalists were selected from over 400 entries coming from more

than 25 countries, European and beyond, by a Jury composed of award-winning

cartoonists, journalists, and experts.

“During the lengthy process of selection, it has been rewarding to witness

the variety and mastery of the many submissions, ranging from sheer

poetry to stark and striking statements - and anything in between. As

Maastricht, NL (10 settembre 2022) Lo European Press Prize e Studio Europa Maastricht, fondatori dello European Cartoon Award, annunciano i nomi del vincitore e dei secondi classificati dell’edizione di quest’anno del premio. Il primo premio è stato vinto dal vignettista cubano Carlos David Fuentes, per il suo lavoro “Putin in Ucraina” pubblicato dalla rivista francese Courrier International. I due secondi classificati sono Marilena Nardi (Italia) e Harry Burton (Irlanda). Menzioni d’onore sono state assegnate a Jean-Michel Delambre (Francia) e Vasco Gargalo (Portogallo).

I lavori del vincitore e dei secondi classificati sono stati selezionati tra oltre 400 candidature provenienti da 29 paesi - entro e fuori i confini dell’Europa - da una giuria composta da vignettisti pluripremiati, finalisti dell'anno precedente, attivisti ed esperti.

Janet Anderson, chair del Panel of Judges:

"La giuria è rimasta colpita dalla forza della narrazione e dalle immagini di grande impatto di molte delle vignette presentate. Tom Janssen ha giustamente detto che la vignetta di Carlos David Fuentes è l'immagine giusta per rappresentare questo anno difficile; ha un impatto drammatico, ed è molto forte. La vignetta di Harry Burton sul diritto all'aborto affronta un tema molto importante con arguzia e con un'immagine chiaramente riconoscibile. Infine, potrebbe sembrare che la questione dell'Afghanistan sia scivolata fuori dall'agenda del mondo, ma i problemi di fondo sono ancora enormi e la vignetta di Marilena Nardi racconta questa storia in modo semplice ma molto efficace."

La giuria ha deciso di assegnare anche due menzioni d’onore, a Vasco Gargalo e

Jean-Michel Delambre.

La vignetta di Jean-Michel Delambre tratta il tema dell';invasione

dell'Ucraina in modo umoristico, pur portando avanti una questione

molto importante. La vignetta del lecca-lecca di Vasco Gargalo tratta

un tema che sta ancora interessando gran parte del mondo e, per il

suo scioccante richiamo, la giuria ha deciso di assegnarle una

menzione speciale."

La giuria dello European Cartoon Award 2022 è composta da: Tom Janssen

(vincitore 2021), Janet Anderson, Catherine André, Jen Sorensen, e Niels Bo

Bojesen. E, per il primo round di selezione, si è unita al voto una giuria composta da

quattro finalisti dell’anno precedente: Osama Hajjaj, Saeed Sadeghi, Konstantinos

Tsanakas, e Vitor Neves.

Dopo due round di valutazione, le due giurie hanno identificato un gruppo di 16 vignette qualificate per la selezione finale. Ecco la lista dei 16 finalisti autori delle vignette:

Decisive, provocatorie, a volte scioccanti e altre divertenti: queste vignette sono uno specchio per gli europei e commentano sia le questioni urgenti del nostro continente sia il modo in cui interagiamo con il resto del mondo. Ciò le rende una parte cruciale del dibattito pubblico in cui vengono messe in discussione vecchie idee e ne vengono introdotte di nuove.”

L'European Cartoon Award è stato fondato dallo European Press Prize e da Studio Europa Maastricht nel 2019, anno in cui il New York Times ha deciso di non pubblicare più vignette editoriali. L'ECA premia il coraggio e la qualità nel campo delle vignette e promuove il dibattito sul tema dell'Europa e delle sue democrazie.

The Nominees were chosen from the Longlist, the 40 cartoons we revealed last week and that will be on display at the Beeld en Geluid museum in The Hague from September 22.

We are glad to announce the Longlist of the third edition of the European Cartoon Award, the prize we founded in 2019 with Studio Europa Maastricht astricht to recognise courage and quality in the field of cartooning ✍️

The 40 longlisted cartoons, selected from the hundreds that were submitted, will be part of an exhibition at the Beeld en Geluid Den Haag museum in The Hague from September 22, 2022.

Giury

The European Cartoon Award has two juries: the Laureates one, composed by five nominees of the last edition, and the Panel of Judges, composed by the winner of the last year’s edition together with four expert journalists, cartoonists, or activist.

Janet Anderson 

Janet H. Anderson is a journalist and editor covering war crimes trials. As a trainer and mentor she supports NGOs and campaigning journalists in making impact via the media and developing their advocacy skills on a range of human rights subjects. Janet also co-hosts Asymmetrical Haircuts: a podcast providing a gender balance to international criminal justice commentary. Trained by the BBC, she has worked for a wide range of broadcast and published media across Europe and Africa.

Tom Janssen

Tom Janssen (Breda,1950), or Tom, is a Dutch editorial cartoonist who works already many decades for the national newspaper Trouw and regional Dutch newspapers. He won last year the European cartoon award. His cartoons are also published via Cagle cartoons, Le Courrier international and Vox Europe.

Niels Bo Bojesen

Niels Bo Bojesen is a Danish editorial cartoonist. A graduate of the Danish School of Design and having attended the School of Visual Arts/ Department of Media Arts, New York. He creates editorial cartoons for the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten as well as international websites, newspapers and magazines.

Jen Sorensen

Jen Sorensen is a cartoonist based in the United States. She was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist in 2017, the winner of the 2014 Herblock Prize, and recipient of a 2013 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. In 2021, she served as President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. Her work has appeared in The Nib, The Nation, Politico, and newspapers around the US.

Chaterine Andrè

Catherine André is a journalist, cofounder and Editorial director of the multilingual European media Voxeurop. She is also Deputy-editor-in-chief of the monthly French magazine Alternatives Economiques. Having studied and lived in many European countries and worked for almost twenty years at Courrier international, she values cartoons as a full journalist genre. She is a Jury member for the Louise Weiss Prize award of European journalism, and the World Press Cartoon award 2022.

The Laureates

Osama Hajjaj

Osama Hajjaj Jordanian editorial cartoonist. He works for several international websites and newspapers such as Cartoon Movement & Cagle Cartoons, Le Monde, and France 24. Osama has received several awards, and he is famous in Jordan through his cartoon characters “Atta and Atwa”.

Saeed Sadeghi

Born in 1974 Jahrom, Iran .B.A in painting from Tehran Art University , Art teacher. Activity in Cartoon, painting and Graphic design. Win more than 130 national and international cartoon awards. Holding several solo exhibitions of cartoons and national and international judging.<br>A cartoonist in national newspaper and magazines. Collaboration with a number of international cartoon websites.

Konstantinos Tsanakas

Dino is a cartoonist/illustrator based in Greece while working with European and international press so far such as Politico Eu, Knack, MO magazine, World Policy Journal etc. Been part of numerous exhibitions around the globe and been awarded with the silver prize of the Don Quichote 2018 cartoon contest and the golden prize of the World Humor Awards in 2019. In 2021 he was one of the 15 finalists of the ECA.

Vitor Neves

Vitor Neves was born in Sandim (Porto, Portugal) in August of 1963. He was still a baby when emigrated to Venezuela. Mostly self-taught, from an early age, he started working in the design departments of several top rated advertising agencies in Caracas and on Margarita Island. After high school he took a course in drawing and illustration. Today he works in a design and communication company in Portugal. Vitor has participated in several group exhibitions. Won some awards and was a finalist in several events related to illustration and cartoon. He has done illustrations for children’s books. His cartoons appear published on the Cartoon Movement website.

Mission

Quality journalism is of vital importance to healthy democracies – and cartoonists play a crucial role in this system of checks and balances. Their creations are the hallmark of an open society. With just a single image they hold up a mirror, make change negotiable, and foster public debate.

Cartoons are an important part of an open conversation, because they help us question old ideas and introduce new ones. Yet, more than any other form of journalism, cartoons are feeling the strain of the shrinking space for freedom of expression.

The European Cartoon Award was founded by the European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht in 2019 – the year in which the New York Times decided to stop running editorial cartoons altogether. Studio Europa Maastricht and the European Press Prize aim to award courage and quality in the field of cartooning and foster conversation on the topic of Europe.

To encourage cartoonists to continue their essential task, we have launched the European Cartoon Award, worth €10,000.

Un giornalismo di qualità è di vitale importanza per democrazie sane e i fumettisti svolgono un ruolo cruciale in questo sistema di controlli ed equilibri. Le loro creazioni sono il segno distintivo di una società aperta. Con una sola immagine reggono uno specchio, rendono negoziabile il cambiamento e promuovono il dibattito pubblico.

Lo Studio Europa Maastricht e l'European Press Prize mirano a premiare il coraggio e la qualità nel campo della vignettatura e favorire la conversazione sul tema dell'Europa.

Per incoraggiare i fumettisti a continuare il loro compito essenziale, abbiamo lanciato l'European Cartoon Award, del valore di 10.000 euro .

European Press Prize e lo Studio Europa Maastricht annunciano l’apertura della terza edizione di European Cartoon Award, il 9 maggio 2022.

(Amsterdam, 9 maggio 2022) Dal 9 maggio al 20 giugno 2022, i vignettisti potranno presentare i propri lavori per la terza edizione dello European Cartoon Award. Le vignette presentate dovranno essere state realizzate tra il 1 gennaio 2021 e il 9 maggio 2022 e pubblicate da media di un paese del Consiglio d'Europa, della Bielorussia e della Russia. Fondato nel 2019 dallo European Press Prize e dallo Studio Europa Maastricht, lo European Cartoon Award assegna al proprio vincitore un premio di 10.000 euro, uno dei più alti premi monetari per i vignettisti.

Sullo European Cartoon Award

Lo European Cartoon Award è stato fondato nel 2019 dallo European Press Prize e dallo Studio Europa Maastricht per incoraggiare i vignettisti nel loro lavoro essenziale per la libertà di espressione. 

"I vignettisti sono una "specie in via di estinzione": devono fare i conti con una resistenza crescente, con la censura e persino con minacce e violenza. Il loro spazio si sta riducendo, sia nelle pubblicazioni disponibili che nei temi che possono affrontare. Questo non succede solo lontano da noi, ma anche qui in Europa", ha detto il direttore dello European Press Prize Thomas van Neerbos.

Essenziale per la democrazia

Le vignette sono una parte indispensabile del dibattito pubblico. Nel linguaggio universale dell'immagine, trascendono le frontiere e mettono il dito sul punto dolente. Avverse alle convenzioni, provocatorie, creative e giocose, le vignette sono il segno distintivo di una società europea aperta. 

Gonny Willems, direttore dello Studio Europa Maastricht: "In questi tempi di polarizzazione senza precedenti, c'è una mancanza di comprensione per la prospettiva dell'altro. Le vignette possono offrire un'apertura alla verità dell'altro con ironia, umorismo e acutezza".

Dietro l'angolo

Difficile compito per Angela Merkel alla Presidenza del Consiglio Europeo che deve cercare di far desistere il Presidente del Parlamento che chiede che vengano ripristinati i fondi del piano NGEU tagliati per le insistenze dei paesi frugali. 

Una miseria nei confronti delle cifre stanziate nel bilancio dell´Unione ma soprattutto una questione di prestigio del Parlamento che deve mandar giú i rebates a favore dei paesi frugali e chiudere un po´ gli occhi nei confronti di Ungheria e Polonia sul rispetto dei diritti civili.

Fa bene David Sassoli a tener duro,  non é solo l´Italia che dovrá presto fare i conti con l´incombente crisi economica.

© Marco De Angelis * = Nel giorno dei funerali di David Sassoli, voglio salutarlo con una rosa bianca: è il mio disegno che fu utilizzato dal 1982 come logo dell'associazione Rosa Bianca, fondata dal compianto amico Paolo Giuntella e alla quale David aderì con entusiasmo. Non possiamo che ringraziarlo per quanto ha fatto per l'Italia e per l'Europa, indicandolo come esempio a coloro che vogliono impegnarsi al servizio del proprio Paese, e ricordandolo quando era ancora un giovane collega e bella promessa del giornalismo.
