Il più autorevole quotidiano americano non pubblicherà più cartoons editoriali. La decisione presa dopo che una vignetta, critica nei confronti del Presidente israeliano Netanyahu, è stata accusata di antisionismo.
Il New York Times scopre ora che, in ossequio al proprio motto, non vale la pena pubblicare satira,  d'ora in poi solo del vecchio e sano umorismo.

Il cane guida
Al New York Times privato dei cartoons editoriali mancherà qualcosa.
Anche se spesso o proprio perchè in contrasto con la linea politica di un giornale la vera satira è un indispensabile cane da guardia della libera informazione.

This time the "failing New York Times" really is failing, big time

Editorial cartoonists across America and the world have consistently, uniformly and vigorously defended the ideal of a free press from the attacks of tyrants, dictators and twittering demagogues. But now cartoonists are united in their outrage as it has become apparent this week that The New York Times has indeed sadly failed. Monday, the Times announced it would no longer publish in-house editorial cartoons in its editions, ending their regular publication of the work of internationally acclaimed cartoonist Patrick Chappatte.

This decision comes weeks after the Times was burned by their own editorial negligence in running a syndicated cartoon that was widely condemned as being anti-Semitic. Doubling down on this clumsiness in response to the resultant furor, the Times announced that they would no longer run syndicated editorial cartoons. Their decision now to not run in-house cartoons as well only adds to that ham-handedness, blaming the medium of cartoons for what resulted from their own lack of editorial oversight.

In a statement defending their action, the Times said they “plan to continue investing in forms of Opinion journalism, including visual journalism, that express nuance, complexity and strong voice …” From this description, it seems the type of “visual journalism” the Times envisions has more to do with storytelling than with expressing strong opinions.

The best editorial cartoons are not celebrated for their nuance. It is their clarity and pointedness, the sharpness of their satire, that make them such powerful vehicles for expressing opinion. There is no “on the other hand” in an editorial cartoon. This power, understandably, makes editors nervous, but to completely discontinue their use is letting anxiety slide into cowardice. With their decision to end using editorial cartoons, the Gray Lady, as the Times has been called, has become even more gray and dingy. And the environment for free expression and the free exchange of ideas has become even more bleak.

Agencia AJN.- Il quotidiano New York Times ha riferito che smetterà di pubblicare fumetti politici nelle sue edizioni della sua edizione internazionale, secondo la radio pubblica israeliana Kan, sul suo sito web.
Si noti che settimane fa il giornale si è scusato pubblicamente dopo una pubblicazione in cui ha visto il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump e il primo ministro israeliano, Binyamin Netanyahu, caricaturali come un cane di lazzarillo.
James Bennet, direttore del New York Times, ha affermato che per un anno il giornale ha pianificato di fermare i cartoni animati nella sua edizione internazionale. Nell'annuncio fatto ieri, Bennet ha chiarito che cesseranno dal primo luglio.
Patrick Chappatte, uno dei principali cartoonist del giornale, ha scritto sul suo sito web che la decisione era direttamente correlata alla rappresentazione grafica di Trump e Netanyahu, che ha causato così tante polemiche.
Sebbene abbia condannato la pubblicazione dello stesso, ha espresso il suo timore che i media siano stati infranti dopo pressioni politiche e critiche nei social network.
"Negli ultimi anni alcuni dei migliori fumettisti hanno perso il lavoro perché i loro redattori hanno considerato le loro opere troppo critiche nei confronti del presidente Trump", ha detto il cartoonist, "Forse dovremmo iniziare a preoccuparci".
