Columnists and cartoonist among those arrested amid crackdown on dissenting voices following failed coup attempt
Turkish police have detained the editor and at least 12 senior staff of Turkey’s opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper in a widening crackdown on dissenting voices.
The editor-in-chief, Murat Sabuncu, the cartoonist, Musa Kart, the paper’s lawyer and several columnists were detained, some following raids at their homes, Cumhuriyet reported on its website. Police had warrants for the detentions of 16 staff members, the paper said.
The detentions at the left-leaning and pro-secular Cumhuriyet, one of Turkey’s oldest newspapers, come amid accusations by opposition parties and human rights groups that Turkey’s government is using the state of emergency imposed following a failed military coup in July to clamp down not only on the alleged coup plotters but on all government critics.
A statement from the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office said those detained were suspected of “committing crimes” on behalf of the movement led by US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen, accused by the government of masterminding the coup attempt as well as the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ party, or PKK.

Arrestato ieri il direttore del Giornale di opposizione Cumhuriyet Murt Sabuncu e di altri giornalisti e di altri collaboratori del giornale tra cui il vignettista Musa Kart.

Plusieurs salariés du quotidien d’opposition
Cumhuriyet étaient toujours détenus, mercredi 2 novembre, deux jours après leur arrestation. Parmi eux, le rédacteur en chef du titre, Murat Sabuncu.
Accusés de collusion avec Gülen et le PKK
”D’après le bureau du procureur d’Istanbul, Sabuncu et dix de ses collègues sont accusés d’avoir aidé – ‘sans en être membre’– la propagande de deux organisations : la galaxie Gülen (…) et le Parti des travailleurs du Kurdistan (PKK), hors la loi”, précise Yetkin.
En exil aux États-Unis, le prédicateur Fethullah Gülen est considéré par le pouvoir comme l’instigateur du coup d’État manqué du 15 juillet.
“Plus de 100 000 personnes avaient déjà été renvoyées ou suspendues, et 37 000 arrêtées, depuis la tentative de coup d’État”, souligne Al-Jazira. Le site précise que “la Turquie a démis de leurs fonctions 10 000 fonctionnaires supplémentaires et fermé quinze autres organes de presse au cours du week-end”.
Présenté comme le plus vieux quotidien indépendant de Turquie, Cumhuriyet est, selon Yetkin, “un porte-étendard des traditions laïque et kémaliste”.

The ongoing fascist opression of the ruling power is getting worse against the intellection, human rights and arts. Its latest act is the probation and arrests at CUMHURIYET newspaper.
We are condemning the Cartoonists Association for keeping silent during these acts against many innocent people like Musa Kart, a member of our association.
As our country going through hard times, we see people who don’t support its member, obey the ruling party that lead the county to dictatorship step by step, keep silent while facing these acts are also a part of this irresponsibility and invite them to raise voice against fascist opressions.
