Cartoon: Le Nozze di austerità

Times are tough in austerity Britain, and there has been a lot of debate in the media about who will foot the bill for the impending royal wedding , the cost of which is bound to run into millions.

I tempi sono duri austerità in Gran Bretagna, e vi è stato un grande dibattito nei media, su chi potrà pagare il conto per l'imminente matrimonio reale , il cui costo è tenuto a eseguire in milioni. 

A spokesman for Clarence House, Prince Charles' official residence, said on Tuesday that "the couple are both very mindful of the economic situation the country is in."

But does that mean it will be an 'austerity wedding'?

Her remark is, of course, ironic (Westminster Abbey austere?), but the joke is that she does not mean it to be.

In the cartoon we see a man buying Viagra at the checkout in a Tesco store. The checkout assistant doesn't know the price of Viagra (actually, Tesco will charge £52 for eight of the blue pills), so she puts out a call over the loudspeaker system. Not surprisingly, the man is red-faced from embarassment. Two girls in the queue behind giggle and point.
