This cartoon by Schrank from The Independent on Sunday relates to news that some 3,500 British troops are being called in to help fill the gap in security after British security group G4S bungled the contract to help protect the 2012 Olympic Games.
In an image full of symbols and metaphors, a perspiring soldier is shown inflating a patched-up-but-still-leaking Olympic ring (labelled 'Security'). A G4S guard walks away from the scene throwing a piece of paper (the Olympic security contract?) on the ground. Dark skies threaten overhead. In the background we can see the Olympic Stadium and the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower.
This cartoon by Mac from The Daily Mail shows a group of soldiers being briefed on their daily duties by Home Office officials. At the moment, the army has only been drafted in to plug gaps left by blundering security firm G4S, but if the strikes threatened by border guards and train drivers go ahead, who knows what they may be asked to do?
An extra 1,200 troops have been put on standby to protect the Olympics as the fallout continues from the G4S fiasco. Defence chiefs yesterday placed the servicemen and women – some recently back from Afghanistan – on 48 hours notice to work as guards at London 2012. Full story

Il tempo:
This cartoon by Mac from The Daily Mail blends two news stories: the opening of the first of the Olympic Games Lanes on the M4 motorway, and the heavy rain which has been causing floods across Britain, provoking fears that London could be the wettest Olympics ever.
This cartoon by Paul Thomas from The Daily Express combines two news stories: the slug ‘slimewave’ sweeping Britain because of the wet weather and the traffic chaos resulting from the introduction of Olympic Games Lanes on the M4 motoroway.
A man and a woman are looking over the fence into their neighbour's garden where there is a giant slug. The man says to the woman, "It's moving faster than the M4".

Vento e fuoco olimpico
